Job Fair FAQs:
What is a job fair?
Job fairs are opportunities for local businesses to come to YOU to speak about their company and their hiring needs. Most tables are staffed by recruiters or Human Resources employees that can answer any questions you may have about working for a company or the hiring process in general.
I’m not currently looking for a job, why should I come?
Many job seekers find employment through their current network (family, friends, instructors, etc.), and job fairs are a great way to meet representatives from local businesses. The connection you make this year may be what helps you land an internship or a full-time job later on. Many experts suggest that more than 60% of open positions are filled through networking. [Fun fact, your Career Services Coordinator has only had 1 job from cold applying online vs. 4 from companies where she knew someone]
What is networking?
Networking is the business and employment word for socializing. Don’t feel like you must have a fancy prepared sales pitch to market yourself to employers. Job fairs are the perfect opportunity to say hello and let the recruiters learn about you through conversation. Don’t be afraid to tell a recruiter what you are looking for. Even if they don’t have a current opening, they may remember you later on if something does come available that fits your unique blend of experience, education, and skills.
Should I bring a resume?
Yes! While not necessary, it can help speed up the application process, or it may lead to a future job offer.
What do I wear?
In the past job fairs were set up like job interviews, and participants were told to dress professionally. Now, many employers just want to see that you can dress neatly and appropriately at these events. Think business casual, or look around at NGTC employees to get some ideas of what is appropriate. If you have questions on anything specific, feel free to reach out to Career Services for guidance.
We look forward to seeing you at our upcoming job fairs in April! All NGTC job fairs are open to the public, so feel free to share the information with your family and friends.
